Lord Sutherland
Lord Sutherland of Houndwood KT, FBA, FRSE
Lord Sutherland was Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Schools in England from 1992 to 1994, and founder of OFSTED.
He is an elected Fellow of the British Academy and is currently Provost at Gresham College and President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh - as well as being a Knight of the Thistle.
His previous appointments include Principal of Kings College, London (1985-1990) as well as a period serving on Birkbeck College's Board of Governors (1988-1991).
In 1990 he became Vice-Chancellor of the University of London, heading the federation of 19 colleges and numerous specialist institutes, and in 1994 became Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh - a role he held for eight years.
A member of the Board of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Lord Sutherland also sits on the Government's Council for Science and Technology, and is currently President of the Saltire Society and Honorary President of Alzheimer Scotland/Action on Dementia.
He chaired the recent Royal Commission on the Long Term Care of the Elderly, and last year The House of Lords Appointments Commission named the then Sir Stewart Sutherland as one of 15 new independent life peers.
