Step 1

Books

This is the first step in the process that will help you to design an effective policy and highlight the processes that must be covered by different sections of the institution in which you work.

Procedures

There are a number of procedures to follow:

Set up a working group

  • Identify the person in charge of assessment in the institution. She or he will need a title such as Assessment Co-ordinator. In schools this is usually a senior person, a deputy or a head teacher. In colleges it could be a Vice Principal, or it may be the lead verifier. In a training institution, it is likely to be the lead verifier. It could, of course, be someone outside of the institution, who is brought into fulfil the role.
  • Establish a working group to take the lead on all issues relating to assessment. This needs to include all subject areas across the institution. In a secondary school this should include all departments, in a primary school, all subject areas. In a college it should include all faculties, whereas in a training institution, it should include all lines of learning. The working group should also include all stakeholders, including those being assessed, such as pupils, students, apprentices as well as those who receive data and reports of the outcomes of assessment such as parents or local employers where necessary.

The first meeting

  • The first meeting of this working group should define the scope, the remit and the working practices of the group. For example it may agree to meet every two weeks until all its work has been completed and thereafter at regular intervals for review and monitoring. The named person from each subject area will be the person responsible for completing all actions by the agreed deadline date. It follows, therefore, that those involved in the working group must have the support of the Head of Department, Subject Co-ordinator or Team Leader within the institution, so that the work can be completed on time. Support of the Senior Management Team is also of fundamental importance

The Remit

  • The policy and procedures developed by the working group must apply to the entire institution, to enable consistency to be applied across the institution for all learners.
  • Participants should agree to complete both an assessment calendar and an assessment audit, using an agreed format for that purpose audit.
