Institute News - New - Chartered Educational Assessor (CEA) Handbook

The CIEA has developed a handbook to help those candidates who successfully complete the CIEA two day training event.

The handbook details the role of the CEA as well as offering hints and tips about how to use the tools available to the CEA.

The handbook also gives guidelines about how to develop a portfolio and work this up into a case study.

An assessment-related CPD opportunity for teaching professionals practising in England (offered by the Teacher Learning Academy (TLA) in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA).

Institute News - Cadmo: 2009: Call for papers

Cadmo is a biannual scientific journal launched in 1993 and published by FrancoAngeli. Since 2007 it has been an ISI publication (listed in the Social Sciences citation index). AEA-Europe and Cadmo Board have entered into an agreement which provides for AEA-Europe to adopt Cadmo as the Association's journal and to distribute it to AEA-Europe members from 2008. AEA-Europe will edit one issue of Cadmo every two years.

Invitation to Submit

The special issue of Cadmo in 2009 will be the responsibility of AEA-Europe The issue will focus on Assessment and Accountability Across Europe. Accountability has been a growing purpose of educational assessment across Europe in the last 20 years. It can be applied to whole systems, to areas of a country, to schools, to universities and to individual teachers. Yet there are great differences between countries in their philosophies of accountability and in the methods adopted. This special issue gives an opportunity to reflect, review and consider the success and failure of the various systems operating within Europe within an integrated setting.

Articles must be submitted by e-mail to the Lead Editor, Jo-Anne Baird, at Jo-Anne.Baird@bristol.ac.uk by 15 December 2008 at the latest. Submissions must be clearly labelled as submission for Cadmo Accountability Special Issue 2009. Late submissions cannot be considered.

Assessment News - New video assessment tool

Schoolshape is an assessment tool which allows teachers to set and assess work involving practical skills, such as speaking a foreign language, securely online.

Schoolshape are inviting comments and suggestions from professional assessors and educators.

Free use of the software is offered to CIEA members throughout 2009 in return for weekly input of professional opinions and constructive comments.

Assessment News - 25% off support to improve personal development and school performance

The CIEA has negotiated a 25% discount with Incyte who have created an online web-based tool aimed at supporting schools, colleges and universities with best practice assessment.

Assessment News - NAA take over tests contract

On the 15 August 2008 QCA announced that an agreement had been made with ETS to dissolve their five-year contract for national curriculum tests operations with immediate effect. This follows the late delivery of key stage test results this summer.

The agreement to end the contract early has been made by both parties and there will be no payments made by QCA to ETS Europe for any future years of the contract. Financial details of the termination mean that ETS Europe will make a payment to QCA of £19.5 million, along with the cancellation of other invoices and charges of approximately £4.6 million.

Assessment News - Edexcel to provide additional resources to support national curriculum test reviews

The National Assessment Agency (NAA) has contracted Edexcel to provide additional back office support to complete the reviews for this year's national curriculum tests. NAA took over the management of the reviews process from ETS Europe in July and has already been considering reviews requests received before the end of the summer term.

Markers undertaking reviews will have contracts directly with NAA. Senior members of NAA will work with markers throughout the review process, to ensure that strict quality standards are achieved. Edexcel will support the NAA by providing logistical and process management capacity and data entry facilities to ensure all reviews are concluded as quickly as possible and accurate outcomes returned to schools.

Assessment News - Sutherland Inquiry into National Curriculum Tests 2008

The CIEA is collating member views in response to Lord Sutherland's inquiry into the delivery of Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 test results in 2008.

CPD - Events and Training Course Calendar

Each month the CIEA communicates educational assessment focused events and training courses that are taking place around the UK.

The INGOTS Staff Development Courses

The assessor model supports staff development and this can be used to get recognition through the Teacher Learning Academy (TLA) of the General Teaching Council for England.

ICT Assessor Training

Assessor training courses are arranged on a regular basis at various geographical locations. If you are interested in becoming an assessor, sign up at click here... for the forthcoming courses or put your name and details on the course waiting list. We will use this to arrange courses as far as possible to suit the geographical location. In general, the course fee is £129 per delegate however, a discount of 15% is offered to CIEA members reducing the fee to £109.65.

Assessment News - And Finally

There has been the biggest annual rise since 1990 in the proportion of GCSE
exam entries awarded the best grades.

This year 65.7% of the exams taken were awarded A* to C grades, a rise of 2.4 percentage points from 63.3% last year, the exam boards reported.

As hundreds of thousands of teenagers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland received their results, the pass rate rose again, to 98.4%.

More than a fifth - 20.7% - were awarded either A* or A grades.

The number of entries fell to a five-year low of 5.7 million entries this summer compared with 5.8 million in 2007, down 2.7%.
