Institute News - IEA Re-branding: Members invited to vote

In August the IEA reported the granting of a Royal Charter and in the near future the organisation will be formally known as the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors (CIEA). Along with effecting the constitutional and policy changes we will also need to re-brand the organisation. In other words we will need a new corporate identity to replace the current one.

We would therefore like to invite all members to vote on the various options compiled by the design company, The Team.

To vote on your favourite option please follow the link below. The closing date for voting will be the 12th November 2007.

Assessment News - Promoting e-assessment opportunities - Guide to effective practice

The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) has recently launched e-Assessment: a guide to effective practice. This new resource supports those involved in the management and administration of e-assessment in awarding body centres where accredited qualifications are delivered.

Covering both e-testing and e-portfolios, this guide highlights the development of e-assessment opportunities for learners within UK qualifications frameworks. It aims to stimulate the use of e-assessment in centres and to encourage quality improvement.

Although the guide has been developed primarily to support e-assessment in the post-school sector, elements will also be of interest to schools and universities.

Users should note that this guide is not a regulatory document. It seeks to identify and stimulate effective practice, but neither awarding bodies nor centres are required to comply with the specific procedures outlined in the guide.

Assessment News - A new series of leaflets from NFER for teachers and others interested in assessment

Many people assume that 'assessment' means taking a test, but assessment is broader than that. There are two main types: summative and formative (also referred to as assessment for learning). It is likely that both happen at some level in most classrooms. The key to good assessment practice is for teachers to understand what each method contributes and to build their practice to maximise the effectiveness of each. Good assessment practice allows teachers and schools to use assessment data to best effect, to move teaching and learning forward, and to maximise student achievement.

Assessment News - And Finally

Data link exam success to birth date

FT News, 25 October 2007

Birth date has a striking - and enduring - impact on academic performance, with summer babies doing worse in exams than September-born children at every stage of their school career, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

Of September-born girls, some 60 per cent reach the government's target for attaining good GCSEs; August-born girls fall short of it. The IFS, one of Britain's most prestigious think-tanks, says this gulf means "access to further and higher education, and hence future success in the labour market, is likely to be significantly affected by the month in which you are born."
