Jenny's SENCO role
Overall it's Jenny's job to ensure that every child in the school who may have special needs is identified, that their needs are assessed and met, and that their progress is monitored. She is also responsible for all the paperwork this involves!
As she spends most of her time with her own class, much of this work is delegated to colleagues within and from outside the school with her support and supervision. A key element of her work is liaising with the numerous people involved. Over recent years a comprehensive pattern of assessment and intervention has been developed, which is managed by Jenny, and understood and carried out by all members of staff.
Assessment
For Jenny, assessment is part and parcel of her everyday school life. Assessment includes formal diagnostic tests carried out by Jenny, her colleagues or by specialists from the Local Authority. It includes the moment to moment observation of children which is part of any good teaching, along with various means of self- and peer- assessment that the school is developing with the children. It also includes informal discussions with colleagues during breaks, when staff comment on their pupils' progress and behaviour, ask for advice, and share concerns and triumphs.
