Congratulations on GCSE's 20th Anniversary

"Technology-smart teenagers have impressed 92 per cent of employers with their IT skills to the extent that the employers concede that they themselves are often outclassed in this crucial area of modern industrial intellect, according to a recent survey published by the CBI," says Kathleen Tattersall, Chair of the Institute of Educational Assessors, on the 20th anniversary of the first GCSE examinations in 1988.

"Testimony indeed," she continues, "to the abilities of our young people and recognition of the skills that they have mastered in preparation for moving to the next stages of their education or the career path they wish to follow," she says. "The GCSE was set up to examine what young people 'know, understand and can do'. And in this regard it has adapted over the years - as any live qualification should - to keep abreast of the changing demands of an industrialised society, and the institutions that it serves," she says. "Results' days are for celebration and I congratulate all those students who have worked so hard to be successful this year, along with their teachers and the examiners. "And I invite others to do the same," she concludes.
